ORIGINS OF BASTIDE BLUEMNTHAL

Bastide Saint Mathieu:

18th century origins

A Home Born From the Land

BASTIDE BLUMENTHAL:

Set in the peaceful hills of Saint-Mathieu, just above the world-renowned perfume capital of Grasse, Bastide Blumenthal is a rare 18th-century Provençal estate where history, landscape, and modern luxury meet.

Built in the early 1700s from local limestone and partially integrated into natural rock, the Bastide reflects authentic Provençal craftsmanship—thick stone walls, terracotta tiles, arched openings, and exposed timber beams. Once a working agricultural estate, its land supplied roses, jasmine, and aromatic plants to the perfumeries of Grasse.

Today, the property spans terraced gardens and an emerging vineyard, offering a timeless Provençal setting. Carefully restored, the Bastide now features seven bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a private wellness center with spa and gym, and an 8 × 15 metre swimming pool overlooking the hills.

Bastide Blumenthal is an exceptional retreat—where three centuries of heritage are reimagined for refined contemporary living.

A PROVENÇAL ESTATE WITH

THREE CENTURIES OF HISTORY

The original structure of Bastide Blumenthal was uniquely integrated into a natural rock formation within the garden. Rather than reshaping the hillside, early builders incorporated the rock directly into the estate’s foundation and outdoor spaces. Portions of this stone remain visible today, offering a rare and authentic connection to the Bastide’s origins.

Constructed from hand-cut limestone quarried in the Saint-Mathieu hills, the house showcases classic Provençal craftsmanship: thick stone walls, terracotta canal tiles softened by centuries of sun, carved stone arches, and exposed timber beams. At its heart stood a wood-fired oven, once used daily for baking and heating.

Bastide Blumenthal

A PROVENÇAL ESTATE WITH THREE CENTURIES OF HISTORY

Nestled in the peaceful hills of Saint-Mathieu, just above the historic perfume capital of Grasse, Bastide Blumenthal is a timeless Provençal Bastide rooted in land, craftsmanship, and tradition. Originating in the early 1700s, the estate reflects the era when refined stone homes were built to oversee agricultural land and enjoy the serenity of the countryside.

AGRICULTURE

THE LAND THAT FED GRASSE

Before becoming a luxury retreat, Bastide Blumenthal was a working agricultural estate closely tied to Grasse’s perfume industry.

The land produced:

  • Centifolia roses

  • Jasmine

  • Tuberose

  • Mimosa

  • Violets

  • Aromatic herbs (lavender, rosemary, thyme)

  • Olives and Olive Oil

Harvests took place at dawn, when flowers held their highest fragrance concentration, before being transported to Grasse for traditional extraction techniques such as enfleurage and steam distillation.

Nearby Domaine de la Rose, now owned by Lancôme, continues this heritage today. Bastide Blumenthal once formed part of the same agricultural ecosystem that helped establish Grasse as the world capital of perfume.

Terraced Gardens

& Emerging Vineyards

The estate was once surrounded by a hectare of landscaped gardens shaped by historic dry-stone terraces that cascade down the hillside. Built by hand over generations, these terraces remain among the property’s most striking features. With the additional acquisition of land, Bastide Blumenthal now sits on 2.2 hectares and has begun developing its own vineyard. Still in its early stages, the vineyard represents a new chapter in the estate’s evolving relationship with the land.

19TH CENTURY EXPANSION

ARCHITECTURAL HARMONY

During the 1800s, as Grasse’s perfumery industry flourished, a second building was added, transforming the property into the elegant two-structure estate seen today.

This expansion included:

  • New dry-stone terraces

  • Enlarged rooms connected by stone arches

  • Expanded south-facing windows for natural light

  • Agricultural and storage outbuildings

All additions respected the original materials and proportions, preserving architectural continuity across centuries.
